How to Measure Pallet Racking: Complete Dimensions Guide

Accurate warehouse rack dimensions are non-negotiable. Whether you are replacing a damaged upright, calculating clear heights for narrow-aisle or high-density racking configurations,or reprofiling your warehouse for new SKU dimensions, guessing your measurements leads to compromised load capacities and severe safety hazards.

Follow this technical guide to accurately measure your pallet racks dimensions, from base plates to beam clear spans.

1.

Measuring Pallet Rack Upright Dimensions

The upright (or frame) is the vertical support matrix that carries the system’s total weight load to the floor. To determine your precise pallet rack upright dimensions, measure these three variables:

Upright Depth: Measure from the outside edge of the front column face to the outside edge of the rear column face. A 42-inch depth is standard, allowing a typical 40” x 48” pallet to overhang by 3 inches on the front and back for safe weight distribution.

Upright Height: Measure from the bottom of the foot plate resting on the floor to the absolute top of the steel post.

Column/Post Dimensions: Measure the width across the front face, and the depth from the front face to the inside edge of the same post (e.g., 3” x 3” or 3” x 1-5/8”). Thicker columns dictate higher weight capacities.

2.

Measuring Pallet Racking Beam Lengths

The most common and dangerous error when calculating warehouse racking dimensions is measuring a beam end-to-end.

Beam Length (Inside Clear Span): You must measure the inside distance. Measure from the inside edge of the left upright flange to the inside edge of the right upright flange. Standard pallet racking beam lengths are 96” (fits two pallets), 108”, or 144”.

Beam Face Height: Measure the outside vertical height of the beam member itself (e.g., 4″, 5″, or 6″). Taller beam faces directly correlate to higher load capacities per pair.

Identify Pallet Rack Beam Types: Note whether your beams are step beams (featuring an inner ledge to drop wire decking into) or box beams (flat on all four sides).

3.

Measuring Accessories: Base Plates and Wire Decking

Pallet Rack Base Plate (Foot Plate): Measure the overall length and width of the steel plate anchored to the floor (e.g., 5″ x 8″). In seismic zones, engineering codes require enlarged base plates to safely disperse dynamic point loads across the concrete slab.

Wire Decking: The depth of your wire deck must match your upright depth (e.g., 42″). To calculate the width, measure the exact span of the beam it sits upon. For “waterfall” style decks that wrap over the beam face, measure the total depth and subtract one inch.

Row Spacers: To measure the row spacers connecting back-to-back racking, simply measure the empty flued space between the two rear uprights.
